This ongoing flagship project is focused on delivering vital healthcare support to everyone in frontline areas and smaller communities across Ukraine, where medical services are severely limited due to the war. With a fundraising goal of $5 million, $3 million has already been secured thanks to the generosity of Rotary Clubs worldwide and other donors. Over 70 units have been built and are in use, helping Ukrainians everyday!

The primary aim is to save lives by deploying mobile clinics to areas where no healthcare infrastructure remains, or where access has become extremely difficult. These clinics are built in Ukraine and supported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and hospitals nationwide, ensuring they reach those most in need. Each mobile clinic is built in direct response to a request from the Ministry of Health for a particular need and assigned to a particular hospital or clinic. Their use is continually monitored to ensure transparency, to facilitate redeployment if necessary, and feedback from those working with the clinics is greatly appreciated and is used to improve future models and designs.

A basic clinic costs around $42,250, with a fully equipped one costing only $51,500. Over 70 units have been built and are operating throughout central, southern and eastern Ukraine, in Kharkiv oblast, Sumy, Kherson, Kyiv, Poltava, Dnipro, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Mykolaiv. The newly developed, self-sustainable 2025 version of the mobile clinic – equipped with solar panels and battery systems – allows for full independence, enabling them to function as stand-alone emergency units. This new generation has a price tag of $55,000.

The clinics themselves are built in the form of a trailer, meaning they are easily maneuverable, relocatable and rapidly deployable to hard-to-reach areas. They are versatile, easy to maintain and can be tailor-made to the requirements of particular hospitals, for instance as check-up clinics, or dental units. The clinics are staffed by professional and tireless Ukrainian healthcare workers, who highly praise the clinics, as have patients, medical operators and government ministers alike.

The project started very shortly after the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and will continue delivering mobile clinics to support Ukraine’s healthcare system for as long as needed, until it is rebuilt.

The organization has also donated 16 ambulances, 23 fire engines, and 21 minibuses. All this was achieved with a total budget of just €4.7 million, thanks to the commitment of volunteers and the absence of administrative costs.

Cooperation with Ukrainian Partners

Freunde Helfen! Konvoi actively collaborates with Narodna Samooborona Lvivshchyny (https://nsl.org.ua/) and Rotary Club Lviv International. Thanks to this partnership, more than 500 humanitarian aid shipments have been delivered to Ukraine and distributed throughout the country. The aid includes medical equipment, medicines, hospital supplies, and support for schools, communities, and emergency services.

“We are sincerely grateful to our German partners for this cooperation. The support from German volunteers continues even at a time when global attention to Ukraine is no longer at its peak,” said Valeriy Veremchuk from Narodna Samooborona and Dmytro Symovonyk from Rotary Club Lviv International.

Freunde Helfen! Konvoi recently completed its 500th humanitarian trip to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war. On January 30, 2025, a fire truck and an ambulance departed Kiel to deliver humanitarian aid. The mission was sent off by the Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein, Daniel Günther. Rotary Club Lviv International partnered with the Rotary Club of Ithaca, NY, and Cornell University, to complete a vital humanitarian project in Lviv, Ukraine: the refurbishment and equipping of bomb shelters at two schools – Lyceum #2 and School #95. In response to the ongoing war and the threat of missile attacks, the project focused on transforming underused or deteriorating basement areas into safe, functional shelters for students and staff during air raids.

At Lyceum #2, over 800 square meters of space were renovated, including the school’s basement and underground sports gym. The work included structural repairs, the installation of air recuperation systems for proper ventilation, the construction of new toilet and shower facilities, waterproofing to prevent flooding, and the addition of essential amenities such as heaters, a generator, lighting, benches, desks, and chairs. A medical room was also constructed, and outdated windows in the canteen were replaced to improve safety and insulation. These upgrades not only provide immediate shelter during air raid alarms, but also create usable educational space that can be used by students during and after the war.

At School #95, similar efforts were undertaken. The basement, which serves as the shelter, was improved with a drainage systems, new restrooms, and educational furniture. This work ensures the students can continue their studies safely and sustainably in difficult times.

The total cost of the project, covering both schools, was $65,000. The initiative is a testament to the power of international collaboration, with Rotary and Cornell backing efforts that directly support the safety and education of Ukrainian children – thank you for your generosity and help!

The goal of this project was to provide essential or missing equipment for the clinical treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with physical disabilities due to the war. This project was aligned with Rotary’s Area of Focus for Disease Prevention and Treatment.

The equipment included a treadmill, bars for the rehabilitation of walking and balance, as well as an electrotherapy machine. All these items help restore lost bodily functions for men, women, and children, stabilize their physical condition, and support their reintegration into civil society.  Both military veterans and civilians directly benefit from this, as well as the hospital staff and patients’ families. More than 950 patients were treated in the first year thanks to this new equipment, with similar numbers anticipated annually due to the hospital’s increased capacity.

The equipment was delivered in October 2023, and the work has continued since then, strengthened by the hospital’s enhanced capabilities. Hospital officials presented the request at a regular club meeting, which was followed by a site visit by members of the Lviv International Rotary Club. At the hospital, we met people in need of rehabilitation, including locals, internally displaced persons (IDPs), veterans and civilians injured during war.
